Can using baking soda help your hair grow?

Hair products can do wonders for setting a style or preventing heat damage, but they can also transform your hair from luscious to limp in just days. Due to its abrasive qualities, baking soda can help remove product residue as well as any lingering dry skin on your scalp (via Medical News Today).

Dermatologist Zain Husain confirmed these cleansing qualities, telling WebMD, “Baking soda dissolved in water helps remove buildup from oils, shampoos, and other ingredients that can be found in hair products”. That’s why after a simple washing with water and baking soda, you may find your hair super soft even if it squeaks clean.

And compared to other clarifying cleansers, baking soda is a very economical choice. Instead of buying expensive store brand shampoos, a simple mixture of water and baking soda can achieve similar results at a fraction of the cost. Plus, you probably already have all the ingredients you need at home. If you have particularly oily hair, an occasional washing with baking soda can help. But, experts warn, washing your hair with baking soda every day may harm — not help — your goal of longer, healthier hair.
