From BBN staff: Two Belize City men were arrested and charged over the weekend for alleged cocaine possession.
Tour guide Damion Cattouse, 39, and businessman Zane Galvez, 32, appeared in Belize City Magistrates Court without representation Monday on two counts of possession of controlled drugs with intent to provide to another.
Cattouse and Galvez were arrested Saturday night following a vehicle search at the Mile 4 checkpoint on the George Price Highway. Police say cops noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from a black Honda Pilot and ordered the passengers out of the car.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a black plastic bag found in the driver’s side front door that contained a white powdery substance suspected of being cocaine. Police report that was when the driver, Cattouse, told them “It’s just my baking powder, it’s nothing.”
Cattouse and Galvez were tipped off by police, taken into custody and escorted to Racoon Street police station where police say a further search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two small clear plastic bags which were were stapled together in a brown paper bag and contained a white powdery substance that police suspect to be cocaine. The first bag found weighed a total of 6 grams and the second weighed a total of 16 grams.
In court, the men maintained their innocence and attempted to approach the court to request that the substance be tested. The magistrate explained that the procedure took time and with that, they got bail in the amount of $3,000 each they were able to meet. They are due back in court on the matter in August. Outside of court, Galvez said he thought it was unfair to be charged for a substance that hadn’t been tested. A test on the suspected substance has not yet been completed.
