Zac Young reveals spooky secrets about the Halloween Baking Championship

Fans are halfway through the “Halloween Baking Championship.” What was your relationship with judges Carla Hall and Stephanie Boswell?

We call the summer camp “Halloween Baking Championship”. Carla, John and I — it’s our favorite time of year to be together. Carla and I have been friends for 10 years, and Stephanie has slipped into our dynamic, and so has John Henson. We four are a quartet. Not only are we sitting there [and] spend all day on set together, [but] Carla, Steph and I do our hair and makeup together rather than in our separate bedrooms. It’s so much more fun to do it together. And then, as if filming all day wasn’t enough, we had dinner afterwards. Depending on the day, it can be a very light dinner. These are truly the best weeks of the year.

In many ways, it feels like community theater. Let’s put on a show. It is the heart of the judges, costumes and makeup. If we had a huge budget and months, I don’t think it would be so fun. Part of that is the costume, hair, and makeup development, which really happens on the fly.

What has been your favorite Halloween costume so far?

I loved Bob Ross. It’s a collaborative approach to costume ideas, and the producers actually came up with Bob Ross. Growing up, clearly, I watched Bob Ross. I watched Julia Child. It was all PBS because that was the station that came in. It was really fun and then Lucy, my makeup artist, took it to the next level. I looked at myself in the mirror after she finished. I had the blue shirt on and I was like, “Oh my God.” I did a side-by-side on my phone of Bob Ross and me, and it was truly mind-blowing.
